We hear a lot these days about the rising cost of tuition, both at the University of Oklahoma and across the nation. What isn’t discussed nearly enough in the context of OU tuition, however, is the accompanying and remarkable growth in scholarship funding from donors to the University of Oklahoma Foundation. In the past six years, contributions to scholarships have not only kept pace, but also surpassed tuition increases. From 2005, when OU President David Boren initiated the Campaign for Scholarships, through 2011 tuition rose 34.5%. In that same time period, scholarship support has grown by a whopping 60%.
More scholarships, in number and dollar amounts, are being awarded than at any time in OU history. This is a direct result of private giving. You have translated your hard work, success and generosity into a meaningful, sustainable resource for OU students. Through endowed scholarship funding, deserving students still can attain an education regardless of the winds of economic change.
This year’s largest freshman class—with the highest GPA in OU history—reminds us once again of the bright promise the future holds. With your support—and in many cases only with your support—these students are unlocking doors that would otherwise prove impassable.
At the University of Oklahoma Foundation, our donors and their areas of interest are as varied as the academic disciplines represented on our three campuses. What remains constant is our determination to safeguard each gift, to maximize its benefit and to honor its intended purpose. Every day we see the impact private gifts are making in terms of endowments, and more importantly, to the number of scholarships distributed to OU students. You are making a difference.
Our overriding mission at the Foundation is to benefit the University of Oklahoma. We are tremendously grateful to you for investing in the University’s most precious resource—its students.
