Norman native and University of Oklahoma alumnus Eric Melton has joined OU as its first staff member dedicated solely to planned giving.

Prior to his appointment as director of Planned Giving, Melton was a gift planning officer for five years for the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross, serving Oklahoma and New Mexico. Melton earned his OU bachelor’s degree in 1987 and has been involved in private fundraising since 1989.

“It is a tremendous honor to serve my alma mater and to lead such a great effort,” Melton said. “Planned gifts will have a big impact on the University of Oklahoma in the future. It is my hope that many more families and individuals who have already made a planned gift will let us know about those plans, and that others who have an interest in creating a planned gift will ask for assistance. Our goal is to help ensure that any gift you create for the University will be applied exactly as you wish and leave the lasting impact you intended.”

Planned gifts are important to the future health and wellbeing of OU, and also can offer significant tax and estate planning benefits for the donor. In FY 2013, OU had $17.3 million in planned gift commitments.

Melton looks forward to working with donors and their representatives on planned gift options to support OU. Among the options are bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, life insurance and retained life estates.
