Five outstanding University of Oklahoma sophomores have been named recipients of the prestigious Rita H. Lottinville Prize. The students were honored during a January luncheon hosted by the University of Oklahoma Foundation Board of Trustees. Foundation President Guy L. Patton and OU Provost Nancy Mergler presented the awards.

The finalists were selected from a pool of 378 qualifying freshmen who received a minimum 3.8 grade point average for both fall semester 2011 and spring semester 2012.

This year’s recipients of the $1,500 Lottinville Prize with hometowns and majors are: Arthur Dixon, Sulphur, history; Laura Figueroa, Claremore, zoology; Alexander Guerra, Ardmore, mechanical engineering; Ivonne Sandoval, Hewitt, Texas, pre-med; and Gretchen Scheel, Canfield, Ohio, pre-med.

The prize was established in 1952 and endowed in 1982 by the late Savoie Lottinville in memory of wife, Rita. Lottinville was director emeritus of the University of Oklahoma Press and Regents’ Professor emeritus of history and a 30-year trustee of the OU Foundation. A diverse faculty committee interviews candidates for the prize, with selection based on academics, character and leadership.
